As the people of Edo State go to the polls this week to elect a new governor for the next four years, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), at the weekend charged the people to vote for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Governor Adams Oshiomhole who, he pointed out, “has performed for you”.

Governor Fashola, who spoke at a rally in Benin City to formally handover the Party’s Flag to the incumbent Governor as its candidate, noted that what the Peoples Democratic Party, which ruled the State for eight years, said was impossible to do has been achieved by Governor Oshiomhole.

The Governor who had earlier spoken to newsmen at the Benin Airport, declared, “What you fought with your blood four years ago, you have seen the result. PDP was here for eight years. They have been in our national life. That is why we cannot have adequate power supply; that is why we cannot have water, no roads; so if you like what ACN government is doing here, you must vote in Governor Oshiomhole”.

Apparently referring to the comments attributed to the PDP candidate who referred to students as criminals, Governor Fashola declared, “This was where I was made. I am a product of the University of Benin. I did my National Youth Service here and I am not a criminal”.

He told the people, “Stay true to the Party and to the Governor that has performed. All the things PDP told you was not possible have been made possible by Governor Oshiomhole on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, so stay true to the Party”.

Listing some of the landmark infrastructural renewals carried out by Governor Oshiomhole including the eight-lane Akpakpava Street in Benin City, Governor Fashola said although Nigeria has all the money to better the life of Nigerians the Federal Government, under the control of the PDP, has subjected the citizens to servitude.

He urged the people of Edo State to not only turn out en masse on Saturday to return the ACN Candidate to Government House but also to stay with their votes until they are counted and the results declared publicly.

Also speaking at the rally, National Leader of the ACN, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, called on the people of Edo, especially the youths, to form a vanguard of defense for their votes on Saturday saying the opposition party should not be given any opportunity to thwart the collective will of the people of Edo State.

According to the National Leader, “A vote for the Action Congress of Nigeria, a vote for Comrade Oshiomhole, is a vote for peace; it is a vote for development. You must stay with your votes until they are counted and the result declared”.

In his remarks, the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, drew attention of the people to the fact that the day of the governorship election, July 14, shares the same date with the French Revolution adding that the significance was very clear that July 14, 2012 would be a day of revolution when the people of Edo State would declare their final and total rejection of the PDP.

“Democracy is about Justice, it is about progress, it is about egalitarianism; that is what the Comrade Governor represents, not just for Edo State, but for the future of us all, men and women, young and old. They were here for eight years but they did nothing’, the Governor said urging the people not to sell their votes.

Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, in his remarks, told the people, “We are happy because we are genuine representatives of the people. What is best for you is the continuation of the governorship by ACN under the leadership of Comrade Oshiomhole. But the most important thing is for you to defend your votes”.

Also speaking at the rally, the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, said there was not much need for more campaigns by the Action Congress of Nigeria for the reelection of Comrade Oshiomhole as “his performance has already campaigned for him”.

The National Chairman of the Party, Chief Bisi Akande, in his remarks, reiterated that Comrade Oshiomhole has done the ACN proud by upholding the hallmark of the Party which, according to him, is Performance adding that Saturday’s election was a formality to endorse the Party’s Candidate for a second term.

”I will come again soon to attend his inauguration for the second term”, the National Chairman said. He later handed Governor Oshiomhole the flag of the Party as the official Governorship Candidate of the Party.

Responding, a highly elated Governor Oshiomhole said the people of Edo State have been convinced of the performing trait of the Action Congress of Nigeria as rendered by him in the last four years pointing out that those who were leading them for eight years told them that development was impossible.

“Four years ago, the people of Edo State had given up saying that the State was not viable. But we have made it possible. We promised to embark on projects that will better the lives of the people. Today Benin City is wearing a new look. We have provided water, roads, rural electrification and others”, the Governor said.

Thanking the leadership of the Party including his colleague governors, for their solidarity, Governor Oshiomhole assured the Party of victory come Saturday saying, “The people of Edo State have the men and women who know what they want and they will sacrifice that day for what they want”.
