Nigeria: FG begins payment of N1b compensation to communities affected by Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Dam project
WorldStage Newsonline-- Federal Government of Nigeria has begun the payment of compensation to people of Zugeru community affected by the ongoing construction of Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Dam Project.
The compensation estimated at over one billion naira would be paid in phases according to the proximity of the communities to the dam site.
The Chairman of the Compensation and Relocation Committee, Honorable Abdulmalik Usman Cheche said that the efforts of the Federal Government towards fulfilling its obligation by paying compensation to those communities affected were to fast track the work and enhanced the Zungeru Dam Project within the stipulated period.
Cheche who is also the Niger state Commissioner of Works and Transport said the payments were being effected in order to enable the contractors carry out their works uninterruptedly on the site.
According to him, 98 communities have been identified to be affected by the construction of the dam.
The representative of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Engineer Ouoeye Olatunbosu expressed satisfaction on the level of work done at the dam, stating that the current payment will enable the rock blasters near the project site settle down for work to avoid distraction from those in those locations.
Olatunbosu said that payment to each individual depends on the size of their farmland which was determined by the State Ministry of Lands and Housing, adding that the next phase of payment will commence next week.
Community spokesman, Ambassador Mohammed Haruna Manta appreciated the Federal Government effort in the payment of the compensation adding that the commencement of the payment had shown the zeal and determination of the Federal Government to hasten the completion of the project.
